General Posts / CoP Level caps removed!
May 24, 2010, 12:40:30 PM
Hey, all! Just saw this on the FFXI site... they're planning on removing the level caps from the following areas:

Pso'Xja / Promyvion - Holla / Promyvion - Dem / Promyvion - Mea / Promyvion - Vahzl / Phomiuna Aqueducts / Sacrarium / Riverne - Site #B01 / Riverne - Site #A01

Nifty :)

Now, assuming they don't just bump everything there up to 75 all of a sudden... I'm gonna go get me a Swift belt :P

Did anyone win anything good? I got a whole slew of rank 5's, including three on a single character and one on a character that's too low to use the memoirs I took (Rapscallion :P).

Oh, and I got a rank 3 prize from Minjiji :D I'm thinking of picking up a star sapphire, but the price on those is pummeting like a rock

er... no pun intended  ;)

General Posts / The Guild
October 01, 2009, 05:01:11 AM
This probably will be old news to a lot of people, but I just recently found this web series, and I like it a lot! It's called The Guild, and it's about a bunch of people who play a generic MMO (which is never shown on screen). All of these folks are various types of social misfits, and I find the humor in it to be pretty funny :)

I only found out about it because they have a music video that they produced, which a friend just recently forwarded to me  ;D

Large amounts of cheese and MMO-based humor to come! (my favorite line so far: "I was pinned down! First I had husband aggro, and then I had baby DPS!"  :D)

Like I said, this is probably old news to a lot of you, this has been out for a while, but I didn't notice it because I was too busy chasing those darned kids off my lawn  >:(

They kind of snuck this under the radar, but here is the link:

Changes to PlayOnline Member Agreement

Basically, what this seems to boil down to is: In order to change your credit card information (if your card expires, for example), or to make a purchase (like, for the next mini-expansion, or for a new content ID) you will need to use this "Secure 3-D" thing, with a verified card. If you currently have a non-supported card, or don't activate this Secure 3-D, it will still work... for now. You just won't be able to update or purchase anything until you get it secured.

I don't know that for sure, that's just what I've been able to gather so far. I really wish SE explained it better. Actually, I really wish they hadn't made this change in the first place. They're probably doing this because people were charging stuff like server transfers after hacking people's accounts.

The various FFXI forums seem to be exploding over this. It's hard to say if people are over-reacting or not. I guess we'll have to see how it all pans out.

There are rumors that people with multiple accounts on the same card may end up getting banned because of this... I have no idea if that's true or not, it would be really stupid of SE to do that. But if I vanish briefly after the first, that would probably be why ^^;;

General Posts / Final Fantasy IV - The After Years
June 17, 2009, 06:12:30 PM
http://na.square-enix.com/ff4ay/

I'm both excited and very nervous about this game! Final Fantasy 4 is still one of my favorites of all time, and I would love to see a sequel... but then I remember Final Fantasy X-2 and cringe a little.

We'll see how it goes. If it captures the spirit of the original, I know I will love it :)

This makes me wonder, though... SE isn't just doing new Final Fantasy series, they're also expanding old ones. This could get really crazy really fast. As exciting as it is to think of revisiting some of these worlds, part of the charm (for me) was that it was a completely encapsulated story. When you were done, you were done and that was it. If they keep adding sequels, I don't know how that will change the feel of other FF games.

And it is entirely possible to retroactively harm a really good original story with a horrible sequel (think: the Matrix!)

General Posts / Urgent notice regarding tokens!
April 17, 2009, 05:07:29 PM
I've just heard via the grapevine (various FFXI forums) that some older PoL accounts are having issues with the security token. This is mostly NA release accounts, which for some reason are listed as "trial" accounts, and won't allow you to connect a Square-Enix account to it. Since I migrated my beta account, I'm betting this will affect me, too :(

A good summary can be found here

Be very careful when setting up your token!
I believe there is a way to test this without risking your account. For now, I would hold off attempting to link it if you are concerned. I will experiment with Noogies' account when I get it (hopefully today or tomorrow). If I can figure out a way to test the link without making it impossible to log in, I will detail it here.

I know the lure of the mog satchel is making people impatient, but getting locked out of your account is no fun either, nor is accidentally disabling your token, and thus wasting the $10.

I'll keep you posted, guys!

General Posts / Warning to BSTs!
April 09, 2009, 05:32:07 AM
They will probably have this fixed soon, but currently, charm is broken on cactaurs and slimes (at least, there may be more).

Rabbits, lizards, raptors were all confirmed to have worked. But it might be a good idea to hold of any major BST leveling for a while... (dangit :( )

General Posts / Salvage/Nyzul/Einherjar interview

Even though a lot of the answers are "No comment" and "No plans to chang that", I still found this interview interesting:

The thought of expanding Nyzul is both interesting and exasperating. I'd like to be done with that eventually;)

General Posts / April 8th Update details
March 30, 2009, 02:55:17 PM
So far, this is ramping up to be one humdinger of an update.
This is what we have so far:

New Gobbie Bag quests (80 spaces in a Gobbie Bag? Super-Greedalox, go! :D)

Adjustments/expansions to Moblin Maze Mongers

Fields of Valor expanding to the following areas:
Cape Teriggan / Eastern Altepa Desert / The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah / Ro'Maeve / Yuhtunga Jungle / Yhoator Jungle / Western Altepa Desert / Valley of Sorrows / Ru'Aun Gardens

Additional FoV manuals to be located in existing FoV areas, as well as new manuals located in:
East Ronfaure / La Theine Plateau / Batallia Downs / South Gustaberg / Konschtat Highlands / Rolanberry Fields / East Sarutabaruta / Tahrongi Canyon / Sauromugue Champaign / Behemoth's Dominion

New Fields of Valor NMs! This sounds like a very interesting system, where you trade tabs and gil, items, or seals in order to pop a new NM, and you get rewarded based on what you trade (for gil, you get gil, for items, you get items, and for seals, you get experience points :) )

There will also be an option to augment old equipment (probably equipment that only has a defense rating right now) with new bonuses. Not a lot of detail on that yet, but I'm very excited for it!

New WotG quests and missions, of course. Possibly a new medal rank, which (hopefully) will allow us to buy WotG AN body pieces ;)

Job adjustments to White Mage:
White Mage will get stances that will allow them to "charge" spells, based on the amount they cure or the amount of damage they take.
Really too much information to get into here, but one neat thing is that single-target Cure spells, while under the Afflatus Solace effect, will grant the person receiving the cure a stoneskin effect

Job Adjustments to Red Mage:
New "Composure" Job Ability, increases casting time, but also increases accuracy. Also increases duration of enhancing spells the Red Mage casts, but only on themselves. This will effect casting time of all spells, including ninjutsu or songs, if going /NIN or (for some reason) /BRD.

Also... Tier II enspells! Oh, yeah! Also, these enspells will reduce a target's resistance to the opposing element: Like, using Enfire II will reduce the target's resistance to Water.

Job Adjustments to Summoner:
A whole bunch of small adjustments here, mostly to the range of blood pacts, and the AoE area of Ward pacts
Hastega will now overwrite slow in the same way as the Haste spell
Also, the following Blood Pact: Rage spells have increased damage: Meteor Strike / Geocrush / Wind Blade / Grand Fall / Heavenly Strike / Thunderstorm

All in all, a very exciting update so far. Also, the mini-expansion, a Crystalline Prophecy, goes live after this update.

I have a feeling this is going to be a huge update. Probably a lot of congestion as well. If you have any events scheduled that day, I'd cancel them, just to be safe.

More notes to follow as they release more info!

General Posts / A Crystalline Prophecy
March 16, 2009, 12:25:20 PM
The site is live now for A Crystalline Prophecy, the first of the new mini-expansions. Advanced orders start on the 23rd, so keep an eye out for that.

Here's one interesting little bit of information... It looks like there are three distinct armors that you can get (at least a body piece) and get this... when you get the armor, you get a list of traits you can add to it.

In other words... customizable armor!  :o

Areya will be happy about that one :)

General Posts / Moblin Maze Mongers!!

Moblin Maze Mongers is coming!

This looks like the long-rumored, eagerly anticipated private dungeons that SE has been hinting at. I can see a LOT of my time going towards this :D

Nerces mentioned doing something with Beastmaster and level synching a while ago... is there any interest in this? I was thinking we could pick a night, party up, level synch and go wild with either natural or jug pets, just laying waste to entire zones in a glorious, massive XP-gathering slaughter.

Maybe we could do Tuesdays before Assaults, since most of our Beastmasters seem to be in our Assault static anyway :D
It would be a fun way for me to get merits, and to see some zones I haven't been in for a while.

So, anyone want to do this, or should I just let it drop? ;)

General Posts / More updates
September 03, 2008, 02:05:02 PM
http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/3646/detail.html

Well, they're going to give us more xp for EP-DC critters, so that's nice, especially for solo-crazy folks like me... But the big part of this, I'm betting, is the nyzul update.
No longer losing progress after floor 100? All party members sharing progress? Cool, that means we only have to go all the way up the tower once!

Weapons dropping before floor 100? Cool! We may not even need to go all the way up before we get them!

Beating floor 100 will get you TWO weapons.... one of them will be job-specific to the person who activated the rune of transfer, and the other will be random. Which means you'll have to do a LOT less farming to get all the weapons you want!

And, if you've already beaten floor 100 and had your disk wiped, never fear... you'll be able to zap yourself right up to 96 again :)

This has been a great update so far. I have a feeling that they aren't even done yet. They'll sneak something else in, just wait!

General Posts / Level Synching!
August 25, 2008, 01:10:59 PM
I just saw this on the SE website, and I literally was shocked... this is possibly the most incredible thing they ever did!
http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/3599/detail.html

To sum this up... you will be able to set your level to match anyone in your party. Your gear will adjust itself downward to match your level, losing stuff like +/- Enmity, haste, etc.

This will also apply to level capped events and BCNMs and such.. no more needing to buy level 40 equipment, you can wear your AF! (though, honestly, a lot of level 40 equipment will probably be better than the scaled-down AF). No more zoning into a level-capped area and having your equipment fall off!

To be honest, I'm totally amazed over this update. I'm so looking forward to it!  ;D

General Posts / MogBonanza Winning numbers are up!
June 30, 2008, 12:56:55 PM
Here they are:
Rank 5 prize: 1
Rank 4 prize: 44
Rank 3 prize: 379
Rank 2 prize: 1017
Rank 1 prize: 47396

I'm kind of surprised, I thought they'd just do one number, but it looks like they drew separately for each prize.

I'm checking now... I know I at least got a couple of xp scrolls on each of my characters, but I don't know if I got anything bigger or not ^^

Anyone win anything big?
(edit: All I got were xp scrolls! heheh)

General Posts / Ad mominem
June 13, 2008, 08:13:47 PM
A friend of mine forwarded this to me from Penny Arcade, and I immediately thought of Ketsuki :D
1.  ad mominem

An attack upon an opponent's mom, in order to discredit their argument or opinion. This type of argument is usually kept in reserve until all forms of the ad hominem argument have been exhausted.
While the conversation can often degenerate into an amusing banter, the form of response is insidious and has entered all forms of dialogue.

Person 1: "The evidence suggests that the primary cause of Stalinistic dictatorships is a combination of socio-economic unrest and politically alien influences."

ad mominem response:

Person 2: "The evidence suggests...your mom!"

Ah, whoops! I have to correct myself... My friend saw "ad mominem" on Penny Arcade, then went to look it up. But, regardless of the source, it still reminded me of Ketsuki  ;D

General Posts / Scary drive home...
April 11, 2008, 05:57:08 PM
So, I'm driving back from my uncle-in-law's funeral last night... it's a long drive, from the northern part of MN (Babbitt), roughly 240 miles one way.

The drive up went ok, the weather was nice and everything. However, on the way back we heard that there might be a bad storm moving in around Duluth... a snow storm. In April, yay! ^^;

Everything was going pretty good until we got to around Duluth, and then all of a sudden we hit it... not just a snow storm, but a fricken' BLIZZARD. My visibility dropped to about 30', the road became slick and icy, and I started seeing cars in the ditch. Naturally, I dropped my speed until I felt safe, but at 30 mph and 120+ miles to go, I was in for a loooong ride.

At one point we stopped and got something to eat at one of the few remaining Hardees in the state, and I called some friends to see what the weather was like. It was going to be rough all the way back to Minneapolis... hurray!  :-\

Well, obviously I got home ok, though what should have been a 3.5-hour trip ended up being closer to 6 hours. Once the plows got out and started sanding and salting, things got a lot better and I was able to get up to about 50 or so at times (not all the time, though!)

Final count: 5 cars, 3 SUV's and one giant RV stuck in the ditch. I would have stopped to help, but all of them were either abandoned or they had a truck pulling them out already.

Still, the one thing that bothers me about this... This is April! What is going on with the weather?!

General Posts / Next MMO
April 01, 2008, 08:34:18 PM
Allakhazam.com (which is currently sporting a snazzy Hello Kitty motif) has some screenshots that are rumored to be SE's next MMO. I'm not sure if that's true or if it's an April Fool's joke, but if it's accurate, it looks like it takes place in Ivalice.

Since the next MMO is going to be PC and PS3/XBox360, it will be nice to get away from "PS2 limitations" on stuff, like storage space. A wider variety of armor and equipment would be good, as well as more realistically moving garments (just dreaming here, but wouldn't having a cloak that flaps gently in the breeze be awesome? )

I don't know... I feel like there is still so much potential in FFXI, it would be a pity to move on to something new. Also, a graphical update would be nice, though I understand the PS2 can't handle it. Still, new MMO or not, I'm sure FFXI still has at least five years of life left in it, and SE said they'd continue to support it as long as people want to play it.

I don't see myself jumping into a new MMO. By the time that new game comes out, I'll probably have a kid or two, and finding the time to play FFXI alone will be hard enough!  :o

Then again... if I can solo stuff...  ;)

There was an epic battle against Khimaira 14X the other day. We had him on the ropes until he pulled out Fulmination at less that 1%, causing a near-wipe (I still had RR on). I raised up, cast shadows, and started fighting again, hoping desperately to be able to kill him off.

I was able to get in one recast of Utsusemi during this battle, but I still had 20 seconds on my other timer when he took my last shadow off. I was one good, solid hit away from death... I did the only thing I could think of: Mijin Gakure!

It was a success! It did just enough damage to take down the Khimaira!

Sadly... nobody had Reraise on ^^;
